Cloud Infrastructure as a Service for Small Business
Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is the external hosting of servers, networking, storage, and other low level technology needed to run other high level technology (like a website or application).
Gartner has released it’s “Magic Quadrant” report for providers of these Cloud Infrastructure as a Services. You may ask yourself why a small business with it’s own server(s) would care about this. These services are near-and-dear to the hearts of start-ups who are looking to keep their capital outlay to a minimum by not buying the equipment, expertise, or intrinsic risk associated with building a platform to run their business or application on premises. Business already invested in their homegrown platform can use IaaS to move/grow/reduce their internal costs and risks instead of upgrading.
Being a small service provider, we often partner with these vendors to provide a scale and level of service that we couldn’t otherwise provider without huge wads of dough. This allows us to manage the business of technology instead of the technology itself. If you haven’t considered using Cloud Infrastructure as a Service, especially if you host externally accessible content internally, I challenge you to see what benefits you would gain.
